Our walk brings us close to a colony of sea lions, marine iguanas, mockingbirds, yellow warblers and several species of Darwin’s finches. Very close to the beach, a salt pond occasionally hosts American flamingos. This is a great place to snorkel from the beach, both for beginners as well as for experienced snorkelers, due to the unique combination of underwater species and submarine landscapes. During navigation to our next island, we can sometimes spot dolphins!

Today’s afternoon activities begin with a wet landing on the golden beach of this famous island, dominated by the imposing Pinnacle Rock. There’s great snorkeling and swimming from the beach plus the chance to ride the glass bottom boat. Meals: Lunch, dinner

DAY 2: Saturday – Galapagos Islands

Puerto Baquerizo Moreno (San Cristobal Island)
After breakfast, we disembark (dry landing) at Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the island’s capital, and drive 40 minutes to the island’s southern shore. At Cerro Colorado, we visit the breeding center for highly endangered giant tortoises.

Punta Pitt (San Cristobal Island)
In the afternoon, we disembark (wet landing) on the eastern tip of the island at Punta Pitt, an eroded tuff cone, whose trail provides spectacular views of the shoreline. This is the only site in the Galapagos where the three species of boobies can be found together.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

The island is a long and narrow sand bank surrounded by lava reefs. Our groups will approach the island from its western shore, a long shallow reef, the perfect rookery for young sea lions. After a wet landing, our guides will lead you past the sea lion colonies, where you will learn more about the fragile marine and terrestrial ecosystems of Galapagos. After breakfast, we take the dinghy over to this idyllic sandy-white beach populated by many sea lions (wet landing). The endemic land iguana, unique to this island, may be spotted during the morning walk amid the giant prickly pear cactus. Snorkeling and swimming from the panga rounds off our rewarding experience, or if guests prefer, the glass bottom boat is available for non-snorkelers. Opportunity for kayaking.

South Plaza Island
Following lunch and a rest, we disembark (dry landing) in this channel, whose turquoise waters contrast brilliantly with the white sand and black lava of the shoreline. Beyond, a carpet of scarlet sesuvium succulents serves as groundcover for a grove of luminescent green prickly-pear cactus. Yellow-grey land iguanas sit beneath these, waiting patiently for pears to drop. ITINERARY

This 4-night Northern itinerary explores the heart of the Archipelago and also visits the exclusive bird-island of Genovesa (with red-footed boobies, frigate birds and the short-eared owl)! This route offers lots of opportunities for snorkeling. From Baltra you will get to know centrally located sites such as Dragon Hill (with land iguanas), Rabida (with its red beach and brown pelican nesting colony), and the volcanic islet of Chinese Hat, where you will have a first opportunity to see Galapagos penguins. After return from Genovesa you can make an impressive ‘moonwalk’ on the barren lava flow of Sullivan Bay and a short climb to the summit of Bartolome. On the last morning you will look for Galapagos giant tortoises in the highlands of Santa Cruz and continue to the airport.

DAY 1: SUNDAY – ARRIVAL IN GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

Baltra Airport & Dragon Hill (Santa Cruz Island)
Morning flight from Quito or Guayaquil to Baltra Airport. Upon arrival in Baltra Airport in Galapagos from either Quito or Guayaquil, you will be met by your naturalist guide and yacht staff and transferred to the M/Y Galapagos Odyssey.

Afternoon visit Dragon Hill which offers two key-species be seen here – land iguanas and American flamingos. You will climb a hill with giant Opuntia cacti where these iguanas (‘dragons’) feed and breed. Before dinner your guide will give the first daily briefing followed by the captain’s welcome cocktail and dinner. Overnight sailing Northwest to Rabida Islet.
Meals: Lunch, dinner

DAY 2: MONDAY – GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

Rabida Island & Chinese Hat
After breakfast, wet landing for short guided nature hikes from the remarkable red beach and along the breeding colony of brown pelicans. Later you will return to the yacht and prepare yourself for your first snorkeling or enjoy a dinghy-ride. Before lunch we cruise to another islet just out of the coast of Santiago – Chinese Hat. There is a chance that you can spot some Galapagos penguins here. During the late-afternoon walk you will learn a lot about the geology on this typical volcano-islet. After dinner we sail overnight to Genovesa.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 3: TUESDAY – GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

Genovesa Island
Darwin Bay and Prince Phillip’s Steps
As one of the outer islands, Genovesa is well worth the longer trip. This birder’s paradise is the only northern Galapagos Island that is open to tourism. Anchoring is an experience you are not likely to forget. The horseshoe shaped wall shows unmistakably that you are entering the partly collapsed and submerged caldera of a young volcano!

Darwin Bay
Inside the submerged caldera of Genovesa lies Darwin Bay. This site is Galapagos in miniature! The small-scaled area will surprise you again and again; walking along a coral sand beach, crossing barren lava formations and creeks, passing tidal pools, shrubs and further ahead the top of some cliffs.

Prince Philip’s Steps
Prince Philip’s Steps has a royal touch. The often used English name – Tower – of the visitor’s site, commemorates the 1964 visit of the Duke of Edinburgh, a Galapagos lover and patron of the Charles Darwin Foundation. In his footsteps (and in those of Prince Charles) you will be able to admire one of Galapagos’ favorite birding spots with largest breeding colonies of Nazca and red-footed boobies.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 4: WEDNESDAY – GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

Bartolome Island and Sullivan Bay
The wild romantic islet of Bartolome is located just south of the Equator line. This is the north-western corner of the archipelago, where volcanoes are still active. So this day is dedicated largely to volcanism and spectacular geologic ‘moonscapes’. You will also have the opportunities to observe Galapagos penguins again and enjoy snorkeling in a warm, shallow bath full of colorful reef fish. Bartolome and Sullivan Bay are incomparable to any other visitor’s site.

Bartolome Island
Although tiny and lifeless at first sight, this young islet offers you some of the best panoramas and wildest landscapes in the entire archipelago. Surprisingly these warm equatorial waters with coral reefs are even one of the best places in the archipelago to encounter endangered Galapagos penguins!

Galapagos’ landmark ‘Pinnacle Rock’ towers prominently over an isthmus with paradisiacal sand beaches and emerald colored bays on each side. Underwater a second, completely distinctive world opens up to you, ideal for snorkeling. To enjoy the postcard view of the idyllic ‘Pinnacle Bay’ you have to cross a third, dramatic type of scenery, climbing the stairs to the viewpoint on top of the island. During this geologically and botanical interesting climb, you will find yourself in the middle of several very close spatter cones, craters, and lightweight lava droplets.

Sullivan Bay
Sullivan Bay is incomparable to any other visitor’s site; the miraculous bas-reliefs you will observe in the crust of the lava flow are unique to Galapagos and Hawaii. The power of volcanic activity will impress you forever. Setting foot at the Sullivan lava stream is like landing on the moon. The desolate, stretched-out fields seem mostly lifeless, but this doesn’t mean that there is nothing to see. It is very popular amongst photographers, especially those who have eye for detail and love close-ups. And there is even some life! Pacific green turtles, a strayed heron, oystercatcher, or some crabs.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 5: THURSDAY – DEPART GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

Highlands/Baltra Airport
After early breakfast it’s time to leave the yacht and say goodbye. Our dinghy brings you to the harbor of Puerto Ayora, from there we will travel by road to the highlands for our last excursion. In the agricultural zone you can see Galapagos giant tortoises in the wild. Then we will accompany you to Baltra Airporrt, where you can check-in and return to Guayaquil or Quito or your next destination.

FIVE DAYS / FOUR NIGHTS (ITINERARY “B”) – SUNDAY TO THURSDAY

Detailed Itinerary

DAY 1: SUNDAY – ARRIVAL IN GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

AM: Baltra Airport
Morning flight from Quito or Guayaquil to Baltra Airport. Upon arrival in Baltra Airport in Galapagos from either Quito or Guayaquil, you will be met by your naturalist guide and yacht staff and transferred to the M/Y Galapagos Odyssey.

PM: Dragon Hill (Santa Cruz)
Dragon Hill offers two key-species very likely to be seen during each Galapagos visit – Galapagos land iguanas and American flamingos. You will climb a hill with giant opuntia cacti where these (iguanas)‘dragons’ feed and breed. Up to 1975 this land iguana population in Santa Cruz was threatened by wild dogs. A rescue plan was executed and the iguanas had to be relocated to nearby undisturbed Venice Islets where they successfully reproduced. Although they are quite shy and elusive, you stand a fair chance to see the success of this project with your own eyes.
The short walk crosses the coastal vegetation zone, as well as the somewhat higher arid zone with vulnerable tropical dry forest. In the warm and wet season in the first half of the year all turns green. Evergreen giant prickly pear cacti with internal reservoirs followed a different survival tactic in this dry climate than the leaf dropping Palo Santo trees. This is a very photogenic spot as well, with breath-taking panoramas over the bay and towards an intriguing steep volcanic spout of red lava that overlooks the area. Dragon Hill has become popular because of its saline lagoons behind the beach. They contain algae and shrimp and attract seasonally foraging American flamingos. Dragon Hill is best location on Santa Cruz to observe them.
Meals: Lunch, dinner

DAY 2: MONDAY – GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

Rabida Island & Chinese Hat
AM: Rabida Island
The anchorage-site at the northern headland of Rabida is the only point in its shoreline that is not guarded by a barrier of rocks. The sharp corner of the bay holds a striking red beach that adds color to your photo album. Shortly after sunrise and before sunset colors become more intense and the rusty sand and rocks seem to blaze!

Outside the mating season this remarkable red beach is occupied by a large bachelor colony of Galapagos sea lions that will welcome you. The beach wall on this compact spot holds a small and shallow, green fringed lagoon. Although the water is salty, this pool is the most fertile place on the otherwise very arid islet, so it attracts all kind of aquatic and wading birds such as pintails (or Bahama ducks) and sometimes even American flamingos. In the surrounding mangrove bushes – between the evergreen foliage – many different species of songbirds are looking for hiding and breeding places. Palo Santo trees that drop their leaves in the dry season cover the rest of the island.

Outstanding attraction is the major breeding colony of brown pelicans, and one of the best places in Galapagos to observe them. In the breeding season, their brown plumage turns striking white with chestnut markings on head and necks and a yellowish crown. Brown pelicans are the only pelicans in the world that plunge-dive. From the beach you can see their spectacular hunting V-formations, low above the surface of the sea. It is interesting to compare the dives of the pelicans with the rocket like plunge dives of the boobies.

PM: Chinese Hat
Chinese Hat is a 170 foot high volcanic cone, forming another islet right out of the coast of Santiago. Approaching from the north you certainly will agree with its name. Because the primordial fire has been recently extinguished, you can learn more about volcanism, lava bombs and lava tunnels. On the beach there are also curious pillow-type lavas with coral heads on top! These spheres have a submarine history and were uplifted above sea level.

This tiny, rusty-colored islet just began to sprout. Beautiful beaches of white coral sand arose, and holes in the infertile, but eroding lava fields are getting filled up with lava sand, facilitating inland places for rooting. Galapagos sea lions and countless marine iguanas contribute to fertilization. Everything together creates more favorable options for newcomers, like saltbush, which sticks at the beach and sesuvium that rolls out a discoloring carpet, turning from green into red in the dry season. Across, at the foot of the cliffs a small colony of Galapagos penguins reside and you might see them occasionally during the dinghy-ride.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 3: TUESDAY – GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

Genovesa Island
Darwin Bay & Prince Philip’s Steps
AM: Darwin Bay
Inside the submerged caldera of Genovesa Island lies Darwin Bay. This quiet site is Galapagos in miniature! The small-scaled area will surprise you again and again; walking along a coral sand beach, crossing barren lava formations and creeks, passing tidal pools and shrubs. In this extremely varied and peaceful ambience, every single species has occupied its own ecological niche (or preferred habitat) without disturbing others. Whimbrels and wandering tattlers forage actively along the surf, next to resting Galapagos sea lions. Herons wait motionless at the tidal pools and creeks behind the saltbushes. Impressive frigate birds and red-footed boobies nest in the mangroves and you can also notice vocalists such as the yellow warbler, Darwin’s finches and the Galapagos mockingbird.

Tropicbirds, Nazca boobies, storm petrels, endemic lava- and swallow-tailed gulls among others soar along the cliffs. When you have seen marine iguanas elsewhere, the Genovesa species might not look too impressive, unless one considers, that these are virtually the only reptiles that succeeded to reach and survive on this remote, upstream island, and have become endemic.

PM: Prince Philip’s Steps
Genovesa has a royal touch. And, that’s not only because of its former English name Tower (after the Royal Palace in London). It commemorates the 1964 visit of the Duke of Edinburgh, a Galapagos lover and patron of the Charles Darwin Foundation. In his footsteps (and in those of Prince Charles) you will be able to admire one of Galapagos’ favorite birding spots with largest breeding colonies of Nazca and red-footed boobies.

Before landing you will take a dinghy-ride along the eastern arm of the caldera. On approach, the massive 80 foot high walls become overwhelming, and will offer you a better impression of the dimensions of this crater. Sometimes a Galapagos fur seal is resting on one of the ledges at the base. You will also see seabirds.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 4: WEDNESDAY – GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

Bartolome Island & Sullivan Bay
AM: Bartolome Island
Although small and lifeless at first sight, this young islet offers you some of the best panoramas and wildest landscapes in the entire archipelago.

Underwater, a second, completely distinctive world opens up to you. The warm, clear and shallow waters are ideal for snorkeling between harmless whitetip reef sharks and Pacific green turtles. If you are lucky you can catch the sight of Galapagos penguins fishing.
To enjoy the postcard view of the idyllic ‘Pinnacle Bay’ you have to cross a third, dramatic type of scenery, climbing the stairs to the viewpoint on top of the island. During this geologically and botanical interesting climb, you will find yourself in the middle of several very close spatter cones, craters, and lightweight lava droplets that where spewed out by spectacular fountains and cooled and solidified in the air. The Summit Trail is ideal to witness how scanty pioneer vegetation such as lava cactus is struggling to cover the lunar-like volcanic landscape of mostly virgin, non-eroded lava fields.

PM: Sullivan Bay
Sullivan Bay is incomparable to any other visitor’s site; the miraculous bas-reliefs you will observe in the crust of the lava flow are unique to Galapagos and Hawaii. Those who are interested in geology and volcanology should not miss the opportunity to witness earth formation in process, although it is unlikely that you will notice real fireworks and lava fountains on spot. Anyway, the power of volcanic activity will impress you forever. Setting foot at the Sullivan lava stream is like landing on the moon.

The desolate, stretched-out fields seem mostly lifeless, but this doesn’t mean that there is nothing to see. To the contrary! And this can best be proofed by its popularity amongst photographers, especially those who have eye for detail and love close-ups. And there is even some life! Pacific green turtles sometimes use the tiny white sand beach to lay their eggs, and eventually you also might spot a strayed heron.

GTEG-110 – M/Y GALAPAGOS ODYSSEY CRUISE ITINERARIES
SIX DAYS / FIVE NIGHTS (ITINERARY “C”) – THURSDAY TO TUESDAY

Detailed Itinerary

DAY 1: THURSDAY – ARRIVAL IN GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

Baltra Airport, Charles Darwin Research Station & Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz Island)
This morning you will fly from Quito or Guayaquil to Baltra Airport. Upon arrival you will be met by your naturalist guide who will assist and accompany you on the airport shuttle and ferry transfer across the Itabaca Channel to Santa Cruz Island and continue by bus through the lush highlands to Puerto Ayora harbor. Our dinghies will take you to the yacht.
PM: Charles Darwin Research Station
After welcome, check-in, lunch, briefing and the safety-drill you will visit the famous Charles Darwin Research Station. On the outskirts of Puerto Ayora you will visit the shared area of the Charles Darwin Research Station and the headquarters of the Galapagos National Park Service – home of Galapagos Islands conservation management and biological research. Most memorable from this visit will probably be the successful breeding center and the enclosures with Galapagos giant tortoises; even after the death of its world famous resident, emphatically called “Lonesome George” (June 2012) – the last known individual of the Pinta subspecies, who sadly failed to reproduce offspring). For other species and subspecies the breeding project started just in time to save them from extinction. Most remaining adult giant tortoises in the corals are former pets and many of them are accustomed to human company.

For centuries these emblematic reptiles have made Galapagos famous. Hundreds of thousands of them used to crawl around before the devastating epoch of pouching. Even the name of this archipelago refers to these prehistoric dwellers. On certain islands their shells evolved into pronounced shapes of riding saddles or ‘galapagos’ in Spanish. Charles Darwin noticed differences in shells of tortoises from different islands, which put him on track of his evolution theory of natural selection. Because species from different islands are kept, the Charles Darwin Research Station is the place to compare the diverging saddle back shapes and the dome-shaped shells from the Santa Cruz-subspecies. You will also get some free time to stroll through the cozy town of Puerto Ayora.
Meals: Lunch, dinner

DAY 2: FRIDAY – GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

Isabela Island
Puerto Villamil, AM: Whitetip reef shark channel (Isabela), AM: Sierra Negra (Isabela), PM: Arnaldo Tupiza Tortoise Breeding Center (Isabela), PM: Wetlands & Beach (Isabela)

AM: Whitetip Reef Shark Channel (Isabela)
Just outside Puerto Villamil’s harbor a group of islets protrude just above the ocean. These barely noticeable rocks form one of the most emblematic sites that you will visit during your cruise. The jagged black formations are the remnants of a lava stream that ended up into the ocean. These are being demolished by the waves, and a collapsed lava tube forms a channel that fills-up on high tide. Marine life gets trapped, including spectacular whitetip reef sharks (called “tintoreras” in Spanish. This shark species is fairly common in the archipelago, and generally spotted on the seabed when snorkeling, whilst these are resting from their nocturnal hunts. You can observe them comfortably from the bank in the crystal clear turquoise waters. Turtles, smaller fish and Galapagos sea lions,
white-spotted eagle rays or golden rays glide back and forth through this calm channel. The tiny plagues on these rocky formations offer undisturbed breeding places for prehistoric looking marine iguanas. Over here the largest Isabela subspecies (up to 5 foot tall!) can reproduce successfully and thrive by hundreds. The rocky shoreline with its intertidal life also attracts sally light foot crabs, lava herons and Galapagos penguins. Galapagos sea lions occupy the sand beach and complete this stereotypical Galapagos image.

AM: Sierra Negra (Isabela)
Sierra Negra is the 5th highest volcano of Galapagos. The last time it erupted was October 2005. It is the only major volcano of Isabela whose crater regions are actually opened to tourism. A mysterious half-day hike through the cloud forests takes you to a viewpoint at the rim, offering the opportunity of fantastic sights into the impressive caldera with clear weather. The caldera measures about 4.5 x 6 miles across. A somewhat muddy trail to the rim will lead you through an unexpected, evergreen cloud forest that only exists in the highlands of the main islands. The dense and rich vegetation includes ferns, tree ferns and endemic scalesia trees laden with epiphytes like lichens, orchids and bromeliads. The fog and drizzle – more frequent in the cool garúa season (June-December) – contributes to the mysterious atmosphere. On the way you can also spot striking song birds as the vermilion catcher, the yellow warbler and the woodpecker finch which hammers on branches like a woodpecker and uses twigs as tools to capture insects!

PM: Arnaldo Tupiza Tortoise Breeding Center (Isabela)
You can see hundreds of giant Galapagos tortoises of all sizes In the breeding center Arnaldo Tupiza. This project just outside Puerto Villamil is created to rescue the endangered populations that live on five different locations on both southernmost volcanoes of Isabela. One thing becomes clear on your visit: it’s hard work to save these creatures for extinction by reproduction in captivity and repopulation, but the good news is that these important programs are successful and so far have saved several species for extinction. Although centuries of massive pouching have fortunately come to an end, the surviving populations of giant tortoises are threatened because of wild dogs, pigs, donkeys, wild goats. From the almost incredible estimate of 250,000 tortoises in the 16 century only about 3,000 remained in the 1970s. By 2015 their numbers have increased up to about 32,000 in all the archipelago.

Also enjoy a walk through the attractive botanic garden of this breeding center. It is full of native species that attract colorful songbirds such as yellow warblers, Darwin’s finches, Galapagos and vermillion flycatchers and the graceful flamingos that frequently filter the saline waters Poza del Chapin lagoon for shrimp and algae.

PM: Wetlands & Beach (Isabela)
The tempting white sand beach of Puerto Villamil is home of marine iguanas and Sally light foot crabs. Its overgrown beach wall hides the largest coastal lagoon of Galapagos, attracting lots of aquatic
birds and wintering shore birds – some coming from arctic regions! It is part of a swampy coastal zone known as the wetlands, with an old mangrove forest, collapsed lava tubes, and even more salt and brackish ponds. These are home to the largest concentration and breeding site of American flamingos in Galapagos!
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 3: SATURDAY – GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

Isabela Island
Moreno Point, Marielas Islets & Elizabeth Bay
AM: Moreno Point
After breakfast you will make a guided morning hike across the crumbling, pitch black lava fields of Moreno Point with its bird-rich pools and sparkling intertidal life. Pits and holes close to the coast gradually fill-up with seawater. The once lifeless area becomes dotted with tidal pools and filtration lagoons that offer new opportunities to pioneer vegetation. This site counts with two more species of cacti, from which the candelabras can grow up to 23 feet tall.
Fringes of reed, sea grass and mangrove bushes surround the picturesque lagoons that have been transformed in lush oasis. Your pictures get the perfect finish touch when bright American flamingos and aquatic birds have come to forage in the largest lagoon as well. In the wet season the fresh, promising greens become even more intense and contrast strongly with the dead, pitch-black lava. During a dinghy-ride along the jagged shoreline, you will notice different species. The tidal pools form natural traps and attract scavengers and hunters, bright orange Sally light foot crabs, oystercatchers and herons. Marine iguanas wait patiently for their turn to graze weeds on the seabed at lowest tide, while brown pelicans have found an undisturbed place to breed in the mangroves.

PM: Marielas Islets & Elizabeth Bay
At Elizabeth Bay enjoy a prolonged ride by a dinghy that combines a visit to the Marielas Islets in the mouth of the bay, with the mangles in its innermost heart. In 1963 these highest mangles of Galapagos were close to complete destruction, when Volcán Chico, a parasitic cone of Sierra Negra, sent lava flows to this bay 11 miles away. Miraculously the flows came just a few miles back to a halt.

The Marielas islets are an excellent place to spot marine iguanas and Galapagos penguins which is considered as endangered with just some 1500 birds over all archipelago. So do not expect vast colonies as in Antarctic regions, but rather small family groups. On top of these ochre colored and reddish oxidized remnants of a crumbled tuff cone grow several lofty Palo Santo trees. These provide magnificent frigate birds a lookout far over the open sea to watch for and rob returning blue-footed boobies. Next the dinghy will turn landwards, leaving the surf behind and enter through a quite narrow entrance the calm estuary of Elizabeth Bay. Whilst exploring the lagoons and shallow creeks, the outboard engine is turned o, so that you can enjoy the sounds of nature. Graceful Pacific green turtles swim in slow motion around, sometimes popping-up their heads for breathing. In December and January you stand a fair chance to encounter them mating at the surface. Maybe you can also see spotted eagle rays or sharks looking for protected inlets to give birth. Brown pelicans and blue-footed boobies show diverging plunge-diving techniques, while lava herons and great blue herons prefer to wait patiently for what comes along. You can also spot the huge red mangroves and the black, white and button mangroves.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 4: SUNDAY – GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

Fernandina Island & Isabela Island
Espinoza Point (Fernandina)
AM: Espinoza Point
This morning you will visit one of the most exclusive sites of this cruise route, Espinoza Point on Fernandina. This island harbors one of the world’s most virgin, untouched ecosystems, and is therefore very well protected. This exclusive and fascinating island will make you eyewitness evolution that is happening right in front of you!

Espinoza Point is Fernandina’s only visitor’s site, and one of the few locations where you will find some bizarre natural outgrowths. Figurehead is the emblematic flightless cormorant that lives exclusively in the remote west of Galapagos, and could be considered as the ‘holy grail of evolution’. Thanks to the fact that this island has been spared the introduction of invading species and it is uninhabitable for most land mammals, the cormorant had not fear terrestrial enemies. This miraculous bird lets you approach very close. Generations gradually lost their flying capabilities to become excellent divers, but still stuck with the typical habit of drying and showing their unfolded ‘wings’ to you. Together with its neighbor, the Galapagos penguin, these are two of the rarest and most vulnerable bird species in the world.
.
Besides the endemic wildlife, you will also love the almost unworldly views of Volcán La Cumbre’s (Summit) with the dominating cone of as a spectacular backdrop. The narrow headland that you walk is the end of a lava tongue that has reached the coast and solidified on contact with the cold seawater. The black rocks are covered only by lava cacti and mangroves, but are teeming with hundreds of dragon-like marine iguanas that breed and conglomerate in larger groups.

PM: Tagus Cove (Isabela)
Right on the eastern shore of the Bolivar Channel are two tuff cones containing saline crater lakes: Tagus Cove and Beagle Crater. Both offer spectacular layered cliffs providing plenty of nesting places for sea and coastal birds. From the dinghy you can observe marine iguanas, flightless cormorants, Galapagos penguins and storm petrels. It’s impressive to see flocks of blue-footed boobies and brown pelicans plunge diving from considerable altitudes.

Old explosive eruptions have blown out a part of the outer rims of both tuff cones, creating their characteristic horseshoe shapes. The inner crater rim has remained intact and spared the region for a more violent eruption. The seawater mixed with the boiling volcanic materials formed emerald Darwin Lake. On the ground you can find small little lapilli-balls which rained down when ash particles solidified in the air.

Traditionally sailors started to write the names of their vessels on the eastern cliffs of Tagus Cove and inside caves. The oldest graffiti dates back from 1836, a year after Darwin’s visit. Following the inner ridge around Darwin Lake, you start the somewhat strenuous and sometimes-hot hike, On the inland side of the crater you can continue the last stretch to a great viewpoint on the outer caldera rim, with views to the nearby and outstretched lava slopes of Darwin Volcano. On clear days you can also view the volcanoes Ecuador and Wolf.

The arid zone of the inlands is overgrown with characteristic tropical dry forest vegetation such as a special variety of Palo Santo, Galapagos cotton and yellow cordia. Depending on the months of your visit these trees and bushes will be leafless or abundant and green. During the hike you can spot different Darwin’s finches, flycatchers and Galapagos hawks.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 5: MONDAY – GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

Santiago Island
Espumilla Beach & Puerto Egas
AM: Espumilla Beach
Espumilla Beach is a visitor’s site at the northern end of James Bay, on the western coast of Santiago. This beach has become an important breeding site for turtles, as it is no longer being endangered from wild pigs. The turtles return year after year to bury their eggs into the cinnamon colored sand dunes. About two months later the eggs hatch simultaneously. Most vulnerable hatchlings never will reach sea, and form a banquet for predators such as herons, frigate birds, mockingbirds and ghost crabs.

The beach ridge hides a mangle with two picturesque lagoons on the backside. The colony of American flamingos and aquatic birds used to be its main attraction but not any longer after the climate phenomenon of El Niño altered the brackish water environment, and it no longer contains their food. During the climb of a hill you will be rewarded with a beautiful overview of the transitions from sea into beach into mangrove into dry Palo Santo forest.

PM: Puerto Egas
Puerto Egas is the southernmost pearl in the necklace of visitors sites along James Bay. It is named after Héctor Egas, who made a second attempt to mine salt commercially out of an inland crater lake in the 1960s. Santiago and its surrounding islets stand out by their spectacular and unique volcanic and coastal landscapes, and Puerto Egas is no exception. The masterly sculptured coastline of black basalts, polished multi-coloured ash-layers, collapsed lava tunnels, natural arches, caves, blowholes and tidal pools form a very photogenic scenery. If you are a wildlife lover, you will also fully enjoy this unique place that probably will become your favorite on this island. You will find lots of representative members of the Galapagos population.

Sheltering from the equatorials sun, right below a spectacular rock arch in a grotto at the end of the beach, a colony of Galapagos fur seals has taken over the shading area. Unlike the more common Galapagos sea lion this smaller species is no beach lover at all, due to their adorable, but insulating coats. Here is the best place throughout the archipelago to see these endemic, shy and once heavily hunted marine mammals.

Puerto Egas also teams with extremely varied intertidal life especially on low tide. You can notice how marine iguanas just leave, or return cold and exhausted from grazing weeds on the seabed at lowest tide, or how they warm-up afterwards while sunbathing on the black rocks. Ossified night and lava herons keep an eye on the tidal pools that are refilled with small fish, octopuses, star fish, snails, urchins, shells, green algae and many other snacks for all tastes. Noisy oystercatchers, turnstones, plovers and whimbrels inspect these pools zealously. Hundreds of Sally light foot crabs seem even brighter orange against the pitch-black rocks. These crabs scratch algae from the rocks, but are also scavengers and a prey for the herons.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 6: TUESDAY – DEPART GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

San Cristobal Island
Lobos Islet,
Today you will enjoy one more morning excursion. After a dry landing you will take a guided nature walk on the rocky trail of Lobos Islet, with its Galapagos sea lions and lots of birds; including blue-footed boobies. Though at first sight barren rocks overgrown by Palo Santo, this low islet houses more than just Galapagos sea lions. Two other emblematic species of Galapagos also breed here. Male blue-footed boobies and great frigate birds try to impress the females (and tourists) with clumsy dances heaving their striking blue feet or blow-up their balloon-sized scarlet pouches. Assisted by the guide and some crew-members the dinghy will bring you and your luggage to Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, where we board a private bus to the airport. Your guide will accompany you to the check-in counters in the departure hall for your flight to Quito or Guayaquil or your next destination.

DAY 1: TUESDAY – ARRIVAL IN GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

San Cristobal Island
This morning you will fly from Quito or Guayaquil to San Cristobal Airport. After welcome, check-in, lunch, briefing and the safety-drill we leave to visit the Galapagos giant tortoise breeding center on Colorado Hill. This and similar breeding centers on Santa Cruz and Isabela have been created to rescue these endangered giants by collecting their eggs in the wild, reproduction in captivity and repopulation once the hatchlings are big enough and less vulnerable for predators. This center works with the local subspecies of Galapagos giant tortoises. Around the large corral, there is also an interpretive botanical trail and an interesting visitor’s center.

On the trail you can spot songbirds as well, such as yellow warblers, endemic Galapagos large-billed flycatchers and the Chatham mockingbird. Before dinner your guide will conduct his first briefing followed by the Captain’s welcome cocktail.
Meals: Lunch, dinner

DAY 2: WEDNESDAY – GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

Española Island
Suarez Point & Gardner Bay
After breakfast your island excursion will start with a ‘dry landing’ (with footwear) at Suarez Point. This morning promises to be one of the highlight of your cruise. During a longer guided walk you will pass spectacular sea bird colonies on top of the cliffs. Back on board we will navigate and after lunch you will make your first ‘dive’ in the alluring turquoise-colored Gardner Bay, where you can admire colorful tropical reef fish, snorkel side by side with a Pacific green turtle, or be in the middle of playful Galapagos sea lions. Afterwards you will make a ‘wet landing’ (bare feet) on the beach. This is a good spot for a stroll along the sea lions colony .
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 3: THURSDAY – GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

Floreana Island
Devil’s Crown, Cormorant Point, Post Office Bay & Baroness Lookout
After breakfast the inflatable dinghies will bring you to the rocky rim of Devil’s Crown, which is located just outside the bay of Cormorant Point. If fantastic deep water snorkeling is not your thing or if you rather prefer birdwatching, alternatively you can take a great ride by dinghy. Wet landing on the greenish beach of Cormorant Point. From here you will follow the sandy path to the other, powdery sand beach of the peninsula. En route you can observe the American flamingo lagoon. After a short detour to Post Office Bay and lunch, you can post your holiday greetings in the traditional barrel just behind the beach. Next you can explore the submerged crater rim that surrounds the neighboring bay of Baroness Lookout in your own pace by sea-kayak, or by inflatable dinghy. Around midnight we will navigate about 5 hours Northeast to the extraordinary island of Santa Fé.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 4: FRIDAY – GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

Santa Fe Island & South Plaza
Today promises to become another memorable highlight of this cruise, with visits of the typical and popular islands of Santa Fe and South Plaza. These will surprise you again because of their complete distinctive character. Below the bizarre giant opuntia cacti you, as well as birdwatchers and underwater enthusiasts, will encounter some of the most characteristic and outstanding species. After breakfast you will take a guided walk from the beach of Santa Fe and excellent swimming or snorkeling in the clear azure waters of Barrington Bay. Around lunchtime we will proceed to South Plaza – possibly accompanied by bottle nose dolphins. On this Jurassic islet you will enjoy a guided nature walk.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 5: SATURDAY – GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

North Seymour Island
North Seymour is one of most visited sites of Galapagos, and overloaded with extensive colonies of frigate birds and boobies. It is located in the heart of the Archipelago, just north of the main island of Santa Cruz, and close to Baltra. After an early snack you will make a guided walk through the waking seabird’s colonies. Later in the morning snorkeling is on the program. As usual you will be welcomed on board with a snack, while we continue West to Bachas Beach, where we will serve lunch. In the afternoon you will make another wet landing followed by an easy stroll along the waterline of this coral sand beach. Before dinner we will sail back to the heart of the Archipelago, where you will spend your last night on board, enjoying a farewell cocktail with the crew and your fellow passengers.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 6: SUNDAY – DEPART GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

(even ‘more’ endemic, while unique to this island alone), that put Darwin on track of his evolution theory
Meals: Lunch, dinner

DAY 2: WEDNESDAY – GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

Española Island
Suarez Point & Gardner Bay
Española is one of the crown jewels of the archipelago, and offers all that you might expect from Galapagos; it’s a real bird watcher’s and photographer’s dream.

AM: Suarez Point
Huge waves bang onto the southern basaltic cliffs of Suarez Point, forming a spectacular blowhole, where the water sprays meters high into the air. Take your time for a meditative break in silence on this emblematic viewpoint, and convert this unforgettable moment in a lifetime experience.

Española marine iguanas become bright red with a turquoise-colored crest and legs at the start of the breeding season. Hood lava lizards the largest of the 7 endemic species in the islands, mockingbirds that have become carnivorous! Waved albatrosses soaring most time of their lives far out at sea and just come back to land to breed and nurture their chicks. This spectacular seabird is the only tropic albatross and it is considered a critically endangered species. It just breeds on Española Island. During their mating you will be able to admire their synchronous courtship dances that include bowing, whistling and even a stylized form of ‘sword fighting’ with their bills! Suarez Point is also a massive breeding site for Nazca and blue-footed boobies, swallow-tailed gulls and red-billed tropicbirds. During the food-abundant garúa-season you can admire amusing courtship dances, mating, breeding, emerging from the eggs, nurturing or first flight-attempts. Passing seabirds and marine iguanas give you the feeling of being in a nature documentary!

PM: Gardner Bay (Española)
The striking white beach at Gardner Bay is an important breeding site for Pacific green turtles. But without doubt its main attraction is the Galapagos sea lion colony. Females stay year round in this nursery, suckling their pups up to an age of 3 years. During the mating and breeding season the colony becomes even more populous. The strongest bachelors and elder males return from their secluded bases and start again to conquer and defend a part of their territory.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 3: THURSDAY – GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

Floreana Island
Devil’s Crown, Cormorant Point, Post Office Bay & Baroness Lookout
Before daybreak we have dropped the anchor at the Northern cape of Floreana, known as Cormorant Point. Nearby are several tiny islets, which count with some of the most fantastic snorkelling and scuba dive-sites, such as Devil’s Crown and Champion. The historical place of Post Oce Bay is also excellent for sea kayaking. Floreana determines the southern border of Galapagos and gives the sense to be somewhere at the end of the world. Its fresh water spring on top made it the rst of four inhabited islands in the archipelago, although you won’t notice the present settlement Puerto Velasco Ibarra (150 inhabitants).

Program After breakfast the inatable dinghies will bring you to the rocky rim of Devil’s Crown, which is located just outside the bay of Cormorant Point. If fantastic deepwater snorkelling (with sometimes stronger currents) is not your thing or if you rather prefer birdwatching, alternatively you can make a great ride by inatable dinghy (landing is prohibited on these marine visitor’s sites). After a snack we make a wet landing on the greeny beach of Cormorant Point. From here you will follow the sandy path to the other, powdery sand beach of the peninsula, which has been formed by a lava tongue (Easy Level; about 1,5 km, 1 mi). En route you can observe the American amingo lagoon from dierent viewpoints and perspectives. After a short displacement to Post Oce Bay and lunch, you can post your holiday greetings in the traditional barrel just behind the beach (wet landing), which is also a comfortable place to relax. Next you can explore the submerged crater rim that surrounds the neighbouring bay of Baroness Lookout in your own pace by sea-kayak, or by inatable dinghy. Around midnight we will navigate about 5 hours Northeast to the extraordinary island of Santa Fé.

AM: Devil’s Crown
With no less than five sea currents, the marine reserve is even more diverse than the archipelago above sea level. Devil’s Crown is one of the best snorkeling sites and one of the highlights of your cruise. The depth and very transparent waters of this snorkeling site feels like plunging in a huge tropical aquarium, swimming amidst schools of thousands of brightly colored tropical fish such as yellowtail surgeon fishes and king angelfishes. Sometimes a Pacific green turtle or Galapagos sea lion is passing. On the bottom you can distinguish resting whitetip reef sharks, different species of ray and starfishes. The inner walls of the crater rim are coated with coral formations and protected against the surf. Above sea level the dramatic decor of the jagged crater rim provides living space to lots of coastal birds, including lava gulls, blue-footed and Nazca boobies, brown pelicans, and red-billed tropicbirds, which look for protected nesting places in caves or ledges under a rock overhang.

AM: Cormorant Point
This is one of the best places in Galapagos to observe American flamingos and other aquatic birds such as pintails (or Bahama ducks). Its salty lagoon houses a breeding colony of dozens of these elegant and exotic, but nervous waders. The peninsula of Cormorant Point forms the extreme north cape of Floreana, which is pockmarked by numbers of smaller volcanic cones and covered by tropical dry forest (predominantly Palo Santo). At the landing beach you will be welcomed by a small Galapagos sea lion-colony. The green sand on this beach contains a high percentage of glassy olivine crystals that have been blown out by the surrounding tuff cones. The beach on the southern side is covered by finer white corals sand which has been pulverized by parrotfishes grinding the calcareous skeletons of living coral. In the surf you can recognize schools of sting rays that love the sandy bottom to hide themselves. During the first months of the year Pacific green turtles come ashore to bury their eggs. And, please don’t expect to spot the flightless cormorant at Cormorant Point, This emblematic example of evolution lives exclusively in the remote west of Galapagos on Fernandina and Isabela.

PM: Post Office Bay & Baroness Lookout
Post Office Bay is one out of three nearby visitor’s sites on Floreana’s northern coast. Bring your postcards and post them in the peculiar traditional barrel on this historic site. These might arrive home quicker than you! The barrel commemorates an improvised mail service that was set-up for communication between British 16th century whalers and poachers. Returning vessels picked-up letters from the barrel for home delivery.

Continuing by dinghy to Baroness Lookout you will follow the graceful arm around the sheltered bay to the entrance of a submerged tuff cone. Alongside you can spot Galapagos sea lions, Pacific green turtles, golden cow nose rays, and you might even catch the surprising sight of a Galapagos penguin! After landing you can climb the miniature basaltic cone of Baroness Lookout admiring one of the most striking panoramas of Galapagos. The turquoise and ocean blue waters merge with all year lushly red mangroves and basaltic rocks. This viewpoint was the favorite spot of one of the first colonists, Baroness Eloisa von Wagner Bosquet.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 4: FRIDAY – GALAPGOS ISLANDS

Santa Fe and South Plaza islands
AM: Barrington Bay (Santa Fe)
Practically every animal on the extraordinary island of Santa Fe is unique; endemic to Galapagos, or even to this island alone and therefore extremely vulnerable! Apparently evolution has had enough time and isolation to create the wonders that will surprise you nowadays. And indeed, geologists have determined that Santa Fe is the remnant of probably the most ancient volcano of Galapagos; the 850 feet high hill is all that remains from its former cone.

Almost every visitor of Santa Fe would like to get a glimpse of the rare Barrington land iguana. But this pale version is not as easy to spot as its modelling counterparts on South Plaza. This one sometimes asks for an adventurous search, rather untypical for Galapagos; however, there are other times that surprisingly is waiting for you next to the path. Whether you spot it, or not, you will keep going from one surprise into the other. Your experience starts already before anchoring at Barrington Bay, when the contours of its bizarre giant opuntia cactus forests become distinguishable. These largest cacti have extremely thick trunks and can grow over 33 foot tall!

You will land right into a Galapagos sea lion colony on the beach, attentively being stared by surprisingly tame Galapagos hawks. Snorkeling in the paradisiacal bay gives the opportunity to amplify your growing spotting list with (harmless) whitetip reef sharks, spotted eagle rays and lots of colorful tropical reef fish. Maybe a curious Galapagos sea lion is willing to play with you!

PM: South Plaza Island
Although in sight of Santa Cruz Island, the southern of both Plaza islets is quite different and diverges from all other sites in the National Park. At the same time it is so typical Galapagos, with its sharp contrasts, amazing diversity and with high concentration of wildlife. It is one of most popular, not to be missed islands, and definitely another highlight of your cruise.

There are several large Galapagos sea lion colonies here and this islet is best place to encounter the endemic Galapagos land iguana. Watch your step and don’t stumble over one of them when the equally bizarre giant prickly pear cactus-trees distract you! These reptiles are very patient models and extremely photogenic with strikingly yellowish or saffron-colors. On South Plaza the land iguanas remained somewhat smaller because of overpopulation and severe food competition. It is incredible to see how cactus spines don’t harm their leathery tongues while chewing the pads, flowers and fruits. Beware as well for some unique hybrids, a result of crossing a male marine iguana and a female land iguana.

South Plaza has two sides which provide it with complete different ecological niches and wildlife. At the upper rim of this seismic uplifted formation you will learn about its windy, wild side, where dazzling cliffs cut off abruptly the gentle slope. About 75 feet downwards powerful waves splash against the foot of these massive walls. Sun basking marine iguanas have become talented rock climbers equipped with strong claws.
Clouds of petrels, storm petrels and shearwaters make spectacular flights and sometimes appear to walk on the waves. Take your binoculars and don’t miss the red-billed tropicbird with its graceful long tail and spectacular mating fights. These cliffs are also a nesting place for the endemic swallow-tailed gull, the most beautiful gull in the world. Its neatly lined eyes are perfectly adapted for its exceptional night fishing habits. From bird’s-eye perspective it is even possible to discover schools of surgeon fishes, Galapagos mullets and if you are lucky even a jumping manta ray!
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 5: SATURDAY – GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

North Seymour Island & Bachas Beach, Santa Cruz Island
AM: North Seymour
This islet is one of most visited sites with abundant bird life. An easy circular path takes you through the archipelago’s most extensive colonies of blue-footed boobies and frigate birds. At the start of the breeding season adult frigate bird males blow up their vivid red pouches to impressive football-sized balloons. This is one of the few spots where you can compare the magnificent and the rarer great frigate bird breeding next to each other. The even more popular blue-footed boobies show their cute courtship rituals, in which their remarkable feet play an important role. Moreover you can spot lots of other seabirds, such as brown pelicans, red-billed tropicbirds, endemic swallow-tailed gulls and seasonally even Nazca boobies. Between the shrubs you might sight a Galapagos land iguana.

North Seymour originally did not count with land iguanas, but in the 1930s an eccentric American millionaire moved the last generation from Baltra, and saved them for starvation and afterwards the breeding program at Charles Darwin Research Station turned into a big success.

PM: Bachas Beach (Santa Cruz)
Strolling along its coastline, the blinding white Bachas Beach appears full of natural life. The turquoise bay and the symmetrical tuff cone-islet of Daphne Major pull your eyes to the horizon. Much closer, in the intertidal zone impressive sparkling orange colored and heavy-armed Sally light foot crabs run around the dark basaltic rocks.

You will reach a brackish lagoon in the dunes, with different species of wade and shore birds, including gracious and noisy black-necked stilts, white-cheeked pintails (or Bahama ducks) and hunting herons. Migratory aquatic birds that winter in Galapagos, such as whimbrels, also frequent this pond. As soon as the water level drops and becomes saltier in the dry season, you might even encounter some American flamingos tirelessly filtering water to catch shrimp and algae!
These two quiet places along the remote north-western coast have become the preferred nesting site for Pacific green turtles on this main island of Santa Cruz. Females wait for high tide at night before crawling ashore, resulting in an unnoticed, safer and less exhausting effort. In the sunny months (November-February) the powdery coral sand becomes a hot greenhouse, and as soon as the eggs hatch, lots of predators arrive to catch their prey.

FIVE DAYS / FOUR NIGHTS (ITINERARY “A”) – FRIDAY TO TUESDAY

DETAILED ITINERARY

DAY 1: Friday – Arrival Galapagos Islands

AM – Flight from either Quito or Guayaquil to Baltra Airport
Upon arrival at Baltra Airport. A guide will meet you, help you collect your luggage, and escort you on a short bus ride to the harbor and to board the M/C Treasure of Galapagos.

PM – Charles Darwin Station (Santa Cruz)
Although the great majority of Galapagos visitors come here to observe and appreciate natural wonders, it is also interesting to learn how the protection and conservation of the islands are carried out. The main attractions are the National Park information center, the Van Staelen Exhibition Hall, the Breeding and Rearing Center for young tortoises, and adult Galapagos tortoises in captivity.
Meals: Lunch, dinner

DAY 2: Saturday – Galapagos Islands

Santiago Island and Bartolome Island
AM: Sullivan Bay (Santiago)
Santiago, also called James Island, is located in the western-central part of the Galapagos archipelago. It is the fourth largest island in the archipelago. Along with some of the large western volcanoes of Isabela and Fernandina, Santiago is also volcanically active, with many young flows and cones to be seen, particularly along the southern, western, and eastern coasts. A number of large eruptions have been reported over the last 2 centuries. Santiago actually consists of two coalesced volcanoes: a typical shield volcano on the northwest end and a low, linear fissure volcano on the southeast end.

PM: Bartolome Island
It is situated across Sullivan Bay. It has an altitude of 114 meters, from where we can observe one of the most beautiful sceneries of the Galapagos Islands such as: Volcanic cones, lunar-like craters, lava fields, and the famous Toba formed pinnacle eroded by the sea. There is very little vegetation on this island. It has two breathtaking beaches where marine turtles and small colony of Galapagos penguins frequent.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 3: Sunday – Galapagos Islands

North Seymour Island & Mosquera Islet
AM: North Seymour Island
Seymour is an uplifted (as opposed to volcanic) island and therefore is generally flat and strewn with boulders. There are good nesting sites here for a large population of magnificent frigate birds. Blue-footed boobies perform their courtship dance in the more open areas and swallow-tailed gulls perch on the cliff edges. Despite the tremendous surf that pounds the outer shore, sea lions haul out onto the beach and can be found body surfing.
The trees are dotted with male frigate birds trying to attract the attention of the ladies by inflating their bright red skin flaps. They sometimes fly in the air to call more attention to themselves. There’s a circular path that takes you through the island to a beautiful, rocky shore.

PM – Mosquera Islet
Mosquera is located between Baltra and North Seymour. This is a small islet formed by a geological uplift, with a reef of rocks and coral and a great white sand beach and a large sea lion population. You will also observe several species of shorebirds. Along the rocks it is common to see the Red Lava crabs and Sally light-foot crabs. This site offers great snorkeling and swimming.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 4: Monday – Galapagos Islands

South Plaza Island & San Cristobal Island
AM: South Plaza Island
South Plaza is located to the east of Santa Cruz Island, and forms part of a pair of islands known as “Islas Plazas”. Despite its small size, some of the most interesting and outstanding species of the Galapagos are found here. The Plazas land iguanas are smaller than its relatives found at other islands. Throughout the island there are several hybrid iguanas, a result of crossing a marine iguana with a land iguana. They are unique and recognizable at first glance by their black/gray color, with a land iguana’s crest, but face and tail of the marine iguana. The big population of iguanas is due to the in part the availability of “tunas” – their favorite food. Swallow-tailed Gulls nesting in the rugged cliffs are seen along with other sea bids as: Audubon shearwaters, red-billed tropicbirds, frigate birds and brown pelicans.

PM – Cerro Brujo (San Cristobal)
The primary attraction of this site is the coral sand beach. It is an excellent place to swim and snorkel. Cerro Brujo is the remains of a tuff cone. It is one of the first sites visited by Charles Darwin. It has an impressive landscape, where it is often possible to see coastal and migratory birds, including pelicans, Blue-footed Boobies, and Swallow-tailed Gulls, as well as sea lions and marine iguanas. At times the lagoon is completely dry and deposits of salt may be found in the bottom. The people of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno used the lagoon as a salt mine.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 5: Tuesday – Depart Galapagos Islands

San Cristobal Island
AM – Interpretation Center (San Cristobal)
The Galapagos National Park Visitor Center lies close to the port town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. The center explains a series of natural circumstances such as the volcanic origins of the islands, their remoteness from the continent, its ocean currents, its special climate, the arrival of different species, and their establishment, among others. After visiting the Interpretation Center, transfer to San Cristobal airport for your flight back to Guayaquil or Quito or your next destination.

Along this trail is possible to see different species of native and endemic plants as well birds such as the San Cristobal Mockingbird, Yellow Warblers, and many species of finches and the Galapagos flycatcher.
Meals: Lunch, dinner

DAY 2: Wednesday – Galapagos Islands

Española Island
Gardner Bay & Punta Suarez
AM – Gardner Bay
Located on the north-eastern coast of Hood, Gardner Bay provides an excellent beach for relaxing, swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and the opportunity to observe sea lions. Here we can also observe sharks in the crystal clear ocean waters.

PM – Punta Suarez
This rocky land spot sustains one of the most impressive and varied colonies of sea birds in the Galapagos. Along its southern shore, high cliffs rise up from the sea affording the visitor spectacular views of soaring birds and of the blow whole where water spouts up to 50-75 feet into the air according to the intensity of the surf.
Meals: Lunch, dinner

DAY 3: Thursday – Galapagos Islands

Floreana Island
Post Office Bay & Punta Cormorant
AM – Post Office Bay
Historically, Post Office Bay is the location of a wooden barrel that was placed in the 18th century by the crew of a whaling ship. It has been used since then by mariners and tourists as a post office. The idea is to carry letters or postcards to their destination by hand. Apart from being the Post Office Barrel, this site was the landing area for some of the first colonists. We will continue to the north of the island and will ascent to an elevated slope to enjoy a beautiful vista at the Baroness Lookout. It is said that Baroness Eloisa von Wagner loved this place and spent several hours watching the horizon. Within walking distance (30 m) are the ruins of what is known as her House. From this lookout, the landscape covers the coastline from the Enderby islet to Post Office Bay, as well as Cerro Pajas, the pool of flamingos and wide forest of Palo Santo.

PM – Punta Cormorant
This site offers probably the best and of the largest Flamingo lagoon in the Galapagos Islands. It’s situated between two tuff lava cones that give the area a special atmosphere. There are various species of shorebirds to observe besides flamingos; the most frequent are common stilts, white-checked pintail ducks and other migratory birds. It is very interesting to see the two distinct beaches: “The Green Beach” due to its high percentage of olivine crystals in the sand and the “Flour Sand Beach” which is made up of coral.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 4: Friday – Galapagos Islands

Santa Fe Island and Santa Cruz Island
AM: Santa Fe
This island is located in the southeastern part of the Galapagos and it was formed from an uplift instead than a volcanic origin, this is why is mostly flat. There are some theories which assure this could be the oldest island in the Archipelago. Santa Fe is the home of a number of endemic species like the Galapagos Hawk, Galapagos snake, Galapagos mockingbird, rice rats and one of the two species of lands Iguanas. After disembarkation in the beautiful and clear waters you will be in contact with one of the many sea lion colonies. Along the trail many salt bushes can be seen as well as giant Prickly pear cactus. There are great possibilities of snorkeling with playful sea lions and tropical fishes.

PM – Tortuga Bay (Santa Cruz)
Tortuga Bay is a beautiful white sand beach with a nesting site for the black turtles. The visibility in the water is excellent for snorkeling and swimming, Admire the Galapagos sea lions, marine iguanas or (seasonally) mating Pacific green turtles in the surf!
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 5: Saturday – Depart Galapagos Islands

Santa Cruz Island and Baltra Airport
AM – El Chato (Santa Cruz)
El Chato offers excellent opportunities for viewing wild tortoises, both roaming through pastures in the agricultural zone and in the Tortoise Reserve. Several farms allow visitors to explore their grounds in search of tortoises. Descending through the agricultural zone into the Transition Zone where the Tortoise Reserve is located, the introduced vegetation of the farmlands is replaced by native vegetation. The pond at El Chato is surrounded by forest where short-eared owls, Darwin’s finches, Vermilion Flycatchers, Yellow Warblers, Galapagos Rails, and Paint-billed Crakes can be seen. As the visitor walks into the forests overgrown with lichens, ferns, and other epiphytes, it is time to listen carefully for the sound of heavy footsteps and the sound of shrubs being slowly crushed as the tortoises make their way through the brush. After this visit, assistance to transfer to Baltra Airport for check in for your flight to Quito, Guayaquil or your next destination.

DAY 2: Sunday – Galapagos Islands

Santa Cruz Island
AM – Whale Bay (Santa Cruz)
The visitor site of Whale Bay is a cove of green sand at the base of Dragon Hill on the west coast of Santa Cruz Island. The beach contains a large amount of olivine crystals, the same that originate from volcanic materials. The crystals were formed when the magma was still underground.
Near the beach there are ceramic relics, which reflect the same antiques of human settlements that were close to the beach in 1846. According to the accounts of the French captain Genie, a path originated from this site to the top of the island, which was used to collect fresh water. It is thought that in this place lived a group of people who were dedicated to the collection of lichen, used for tinting.

PM – Dragon Hill (Santa Cruz)
The visitor site at Dragon Hill has been open for visits since 1993. This site is located in northwestern Santa Cruz Island and consists of a trail that lead to a hyper-saline lagoon behind the beach, frequented by flamingos, pintail ducks and other species of birds. This site has been re populated with land iguanas from Seymour, Isabela and Santa Cruz islands. There is a short walk to the Hill, which offers a beautiful view of the bay.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 3: Monday – Galapagos Islands

Isabela Island
Las Tintoreras & Wetlands
AM – Las Tintoreras
A delightful place to be reached by a nice zodiac ride. “Tintoreras” are small islands in front of Puerto Villamil coast. There is the Heron lava on the lookout on mangrove branches, and Galapagos Penguin and sea lion often pop out on shore. White-tipped reef sharks are fairly common in the archipelago. Their name in Spanish is Tintorera, thus the name of this site as they are always found here resting in the shallow waters.

PM – Wetlands (Isabela)
Isabela Island is the largest and one of the youngest islands in the Galapagos archipelago. We land in Puerto Villamil, which has the second smallest population in Galapagos with approximately 3.000 inhabitants. First we will visit the Flamingos Lagoon; this place is the largest coastal lagoon found in Galapagos and is one of the main reproductive sites for the greater Flamingos. Afterwards we will follow a trail to the “The Wall of Tears”. Isabela was designated a penal colony by the Ecuadorian government from 1946 to 1959. Prisoners had to build a wall with enormous blocks of lava. Due to the arduous labor and harsh conditions in which the prisoners lived, this site is known as “El Muro de las Lagrimas” (Wall of years). There are a number of interesting sites along this route, such as the Cerro Orchilla, El Estero, Poza Escondida, Playa del Amor and Pozas Verdes.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 4: Tuesday – Galapagos Islands

Isabela Island
Punta Moreno & Urbina Bay
AM – Punta Moreno (Isabela)
Punta Moreno is located on the north coast of Isabela Island between the volcano Sierra Negra and Cerro Azul volcano. The trail runs along a lava flow Pahohoe (solidified lava in a corrugated form or accordion) into a complex of coastal lagoons. The main attraction are several species of birds which can be found around these lakes and mangroves.

PM – Urbina Bay (Isabela)
Urbina Bay is located along the west coast of Isabela, between Elizabeth Bay and Tagus Cove. It is close to the base of the Alcedo Volcano. The coastline had a major uplift in 1954, which caused the shore to expand three quarters of a mile out. Here you will be able to find corals, shells, and many other calcareous organisms exposed above water. Urbina Bay is home to large and colorful land iguanas and giant tortoises of the Alcedo Volcano population. A lot of Darwin finches can be seen as well.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 5: Wednesday – Galapagos Islands

Fernandina Island & Isabela Island
AM – Punta Espinoza (Fernandina)
Fernandina is the third largest island in the archipelago and has a single visitor site: Punta Espinoza located at the northeastern tip of the island. Marine iguanas conglomerate in larger groups than in any other island. They bask around in the sand, swim near the shore and sometime block the way at the landing dock. Among the unique species found here, is the Flightless Cormorant. This bird had to adjust its way of survival and the way of finding food in the ocean. Their wings, tails and feet progressively adapted for swimming. To see these birds, is to witness evolution happening right in front of you.

PM – Tagus Cove (Isabela)
Tagus Cove, a tour along the cliffs in a zodiac will give the visitors a good chance to see the Galapagos penguin, the flightless cormorant and other sea birds. From the landing dock it is about a 30 minute hike along the trail up to the top of the cliff from where you can view Darwin Lake, an uplifted ultra-saline lake saltier than the sea. You can also see several volcanoes from this location. Look carefully at the graffiti on the surrounding cliffs of the cove, it has been written by pirates, whalers and buccaneers in past centuries.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 6: Thursday – Galapagos Islands

Santiago Island & Rabida Island
AM – Puerto Egas (Santiago)
Puerto Egas is a black beach located at the west side of Santiago Island. Volcanic tuff deposits have favored the formation of this special black sand beach and this is the main attraction of the Island. This site is called Puerto Egas, because there was an attempt of a company owned by Hector Egas to start salt exploitation of salt but it failed because of pricing of the salt in the continent.

PM – Rabida Island
Rábida is unique because the red color of its rocks and sand. The volcanic material in this island is very porous and external factors such as rain, salt water and sea breeze have acted as an oxidizing agent. A short walk along a trail lead us to a coastal lagoon behind the beach frequented by a colony of flamingos and from here observe a variety of land birds as finches, doves, yellow warblers and mocking birds.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 7: Friday – Depart Galapagos Islands

Santa Cruz Island and Baltra Airport
AM: Las Bachas (Santa Cruz)
These two small beaches are found to the West of Turtle Cove. Their sand is made of decomposed coral, which makes it white and soft, making it a favorite nesting site for sea turtles. Behind one of the beaches there is a small brackish water lagoon, where occasionally is possible to observe flamingos and other coastal birds, such as black-necked stilts and whimbrels. The other beach is longer and still has two old barges that were abandoned during the Second World War, when the USA used Baltra Island as a strategic base to protect the Panama Canal. After this visit, your guide will assist you in tour transfer to Baltra Airport and check in for your flight to Quito, Guayaquil or your next destination.
